Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability

At Hunnewell Cement, environmental protection is a top priority. The company is dedicated to implementing efficient environmental management systems, considering sustainability at every stage of enterprise design, decision-making, and operational processes.

A significant milestone was achieved in 2007-2008 with the investment of over 12 million euros to install dust filters with 99% efficiency across all company-owned facilities in Georgia. These measures reflect Hunnewell Cement’s commitment to reducing emissions and maintaining clean air standards.

Today, key emission sources in Hunnewell Cement plants are equipped with advanced continuous emission monitoring systems. The data collected from these systems is directly shared with the Department of Environmental Supervision at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, ensuring transparency and compliance.

In 2018, the completion of a new clinker dry line plant in Kaspi marked a significant leap forward. With an investment of 100 million USD and the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies, this project reduced environmental impact and enabled the use of alternative fuels.

Furthering its commitment to innovation, the Kaspi cement plant launched a groundbreaking initiative in 2023 to use old tires as alternative fuel. This project involved constructing a specialized tire warehouse and a transport system to feed tires into the clinker kiln. As a result, 5% of the coal previously used in clinker production was replaced by tires, reducing coal consumption and addressing Georgia’s growing issue of tire waste.

Historically, Georgia lacked proper disposal systems for old tires, leading to environmental pollution and improper landfill usage. Since the project’s implementation, tire management in the country has significantly improved. Between September 15, 2023, and February 1, 2024, Hunnewell Cement utilized 1,460 metric tons of old tires as alternative fuel, conserving substantial amounts of coal—an exhaustible natural resource.

In 2023, Hunnewell Cement’s Kaspi plant achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification, an internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems (EMS). The company is now in the process of extending this standard to its other facilities, further strengthening its environmental commitment.

Through these efforts, Hunnewell Cement demonstrates that sustainable innovation and responsible growth can seamlessly go hand in hand.
